Mattress disposal in Omaha, Nebraska

Omaha will not take a mattress with weekly trash. The waste-collection page says bulky items of any type do not go in the waste cart, and the October 2026 Wasteline says only material in the cart is collected. The City of Omaha bulky material disposal program accepts a mattress at River City Transfer for a subsidized price: a one-time $15.00 administrative fee buys four dump vouchers each calendar year. Fall Cleanup, which the city calls a free event, also lists mattresses; the schedule read on 2026-10-22 still has Saturday, October 24.

Limits
There is no published curbside mattress pickup. The bulky page says there is a maximum of four subsidized loads per calendar year, and it also says each household may dump up to 4 times each calendar year. A one-time $15.00 administrative fee at the first visit each calendar year purchases 4 dump vouchers. A regular size car load is typically one voucher (loads less than 2 cubic yards). Pickup trucks, vans, or trailers are typically two vouchers (loads less than 5 cubic yards). Lost vouchers will not be replaced. The Fall Cleanup and Spring Cleanup pages do not publish a numeric cap on how many mattresses a household may bring.

Preparation

  • Waste collection page: do not include bulky items of any type in the waste cart. Do not place items outside or on top of the cart. The lid must be closed, and items must not stick out of the cart.
  • October 2026 Wasteline, in the waste set-out box: only material in your cart will be collected.
  • Beyond the Curb page: if you can't throw it in the trash, bulky items include furniture and mattresses. The page spells it Matresses.
  • Fall Cleanup 2026 page and Spring Cleanup 2026 page: mattresses are an example of large or bulky items that are not accepted through curbside waste services.
  • Bulky page: state and local law requires that all loads must be covered with a tarp.
  • Bulky page: you must be a resident within the city limits of Omaha. Bring two proofs of Omaha residency, only one from each category: vehicle registration; a state-issued ID (driver's license, state ID card, CHP permit, or military ID); an OPPD bill; or a MUD bill. Names must match. Addresses must match. The address must be a street address, not a PO Box. The ID must be current, not expired. The bill must be recent.
  • Bulky page: before you go, confirm that your address qualifies by using the lookup linked from that page, https://apps.dcgis.org/bulkyitems.
  • Bulky page: when you arrive at River City Recycling and Transfer Station, you must ask to participate in the city's cost share program, or simply the city program. Refunds will not be given if you have already dumped.
  • Bulky page: a safety vest and a hard hat are required if you are outside the vehicle when unloading. Bring your own or purchase them from River City Transfer. The page lists a hard hat at $12 and a vest at $6.
  • Fall Cleanup 2026 page: residents must unload their own vehicle, and no assistance will be provided. The same page says participation in Spring Cleanup is at your own risk. The Spring Cleanup 2026 page says residents must unload their own vehicles and that participation in Spring Cleanup is at your own risk.

How to schedule

  1. Do not set the mattress out for weekly collection. The waste collection page says bulky items of any type stay out of the waste cart, and that items are not placed outside or on top of the cart. The October 2026 Wasteline says only material in the cart will be collected.
  2. For the subsidized program, confirm the address on the lookup the bulky page links, then take the mattress to River City Transfer at 6404 South 60th Street, just north of Harrison Street. Cover the load with a tarp. Bring two matching proofs of Omaha residency from the page's list. At the scale, ask for the city's cost share program, or the city program, before you dump.
  3. If you get out of the vehicle to unload, wear a safety vest and a hard hat. The bulky page says you can bring them or buy them at River City Transfer.
  4. Or use a Fall Cleanup site while one is still on the schedule. The schedule PDF read on 2026-10-22 still lists Saturday, October 24, 2026, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for Northwest (plus). Unload the mattress yourself. That PDF marks the October 3, October 10, and October 17 schedules COMPLETE. Spring Cleanup is a separate free event; its 2026 page lists Saturdays April 18, April 25, May 2, May 9, and May 16, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Notes
Bulky page: a one-time $15.00 administrative fee is collected at the first visit each calendar year and purchases 4 dump vouchers. Lost vouchers will not be replaced. Additional fees may be collected based on the size of vehicle or load. A regular size car load is typically one voucher and no additional fee for loads less than 2 cubic yards. Pickup trucks, vans, or trailers are typically two vouchers and no additional fee for loads less than 5 cubic yards. Excessively heavy loads, in excess of 1,500 pounds, may be assessed the current scale rate. The page does not publish that scale rate. Residents living outside of Omaha pay the full cost of disposal. The page does not publish that dollar amount. Tires and yardwaste are not eligible for the subsidized pricing. It is a cashless business. A hard hat is $12 and a vest is $6 if bought there. The Fall Cleanup 2026 page, the Spring Cleanup 2026 page, and the July 2026 Wasteline call the cleanup events free. The July 2026 Wasteline says Fall Cleanup is a free way to dispose of bulky household items that don't fit in the regular trash cart, and it names worn-out mattresses.

Drop-off locations

Year-round drop-off is the City of Omaha bulky program at River City Transfer. A City of Omaha Public Works post dated July 6, 2026 says the recycling drop-off at River City Transfer, just north of Harrison Street on 60th Street, has closed, and that the WM Facility at River City Transfer remains open for bulky item disposal. The October 2026 Wasteline, in the recycling drop-off section, says the site at River City Transfer has closed and that River City Transfer is still open for bulky item disposal. Fall Cleanup is separate and free. The schedule PDF read on 2026-10-22 marks October 3 (Southwest), October 10 (Southeast), and October 17 (Northeast) COMPLETE, and it still lists October 24, 2026, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Northwest (plus). The PDF says information may change, to reconfirm at cleanup.wasteline.org, and that it was last updated 9/18/2026, 8:33 a.m. That PDF prints 402-444-4636 and CleanUpOmaha@cityofomaha.org for questions. It does not print a phone number for each neighborhood site. The Fall Cleanup page says furniture, with couches, chairs, and mattresses as examples, is accepted, and that the list is not comprehensive. The July 2026 Wasteline says old furniture, mattresses, carpeting, and construction debris are accepted at all Fall Cleanup sites. Addresses below are printed without a city, state, or ZIP code. The same PDF says yardwaste can be taken to Oma-Gro at the former Al Veys Field, 6502 South 60th Street. That line is not listed here as a mattress site. The Spring Cleanup page gives a different yardwaste address, City of Omaha Oma-Gro Compost Receiving Facility, the former Al Veys Park, 6606 S 60th St., and it does not say that site takes mattresses.

Official page

What's not accepted

  • A mattress set out with weekly trash, in the waste cart or outside it. The waste collection page says not to include bulky items of any type and not to place items outside or on top of the cart.
  • At River City, the published will-not-accept list: appliances; animal bedding; dead animals; fecal material; hazardous waste, including auto fluids (gas, oil, grease, antifreeze), auto batteries, household chemicals, lawn chemicals, paint, and turpentine; railroad ties; and tires. The page says this is not a complete list.
  • Tree trunks and branches, brush, and yardwaste are listed as accepted at River City but not subsidized. Tires and yardwaste are not eligible for the subsidized pricing.
  • River City staff may refuse any items and any individuals, such as non-Omaha residents or commercial haulers. Freon and non-Freon appliances are no longer part of the bulky program.
  • At Fall Cleanup 2026, commercial waste is prohibited. The page's prohibited examples include tires, dead animals, manure, animal bedding, dirt, household garbage, landscaping timbers, lead-acid batteries, propane tanks and other pressurized cylinders, rechargeable batteries, rocks and concrete, tires still on rims, tree stumps, tree trunks and logs larger than 4 inches in diameter, household hazardous waste, and full-size railroad ties. The page says that list is not comprehensive.
  • Railroad ties: the Fall Cleanup 2026 page says ties must be cut into 1-foot pieces and that no site will accept full-size ties. The July 2026 Wasteline lists railroad ties with rocks, concrete, and dirt as items that cannot be accepted, and it does not print a 1-foot exception.
  • Tires at cleanup: the Fall Cleanup 2026 page, the Spring Cleanup 2026 page, the schedule PDF, and the July 2026 Wasteline say tires are no longer accepted at cleanup. The older page at https://www.wasteline.org/omaha-fall-cleanup/ still says the event includes mattresses, appliances, furniture, tires, and more.

Other free options

Omaha Spring Cleanup

The Spring Cleanup 2026 page calls it an annual free event for large or bulky items that are not accepted through curbside waste services, and it gives couches, chairs, and mattresses as furniture examples. It says the 2026 dates are Saturdays April 18 (Central), April 25 (Northwest), May 2 (Northeast), May 9 (Southeast), and May 16 (Southwest), 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It says tires will no longer be collected as part of Spring Cleanup. It does not print 2027 dates. The page says residents unload their own vehicles and that only residential household items are accepted.
