Mattress disposal in Dallas, Texas
Dallas lists mattresses with monthly brush and bulky collection, not as a separate mattress appointment. Residential customers can set out up to 10 cubic yards. The sanitation page says to put items out between Thursday and Sunday before the collection week. A code compliance page gives a Monday 7:00 a.m. deadline instead. The collections FAQ also names box springs. The facility pages do not name mattresses, and the city pages read for this record do not publish a separate mattress price.
Rules
- Curbside allowed
- Yes
- Appointment required
- No
- Limits
- The brush and bulky page gives residential customers monthly curbside collection of up to 10 cubic yards, and one 20 cubic yard exception per calendar year if it is requested on time. That page's accepted list names mattresses and does not name box springs. The collections FAQ describes the bulk items on that collection-week lookup as large limbs, bagged leaves, furniture, mattresses, and box springs. The code compliance top-10 page also names mattresses and box springs. The brush page says the collection is not available for business or commercial properties. The residential garbage page says the department is the exclusive solid waste collection service provider for single-family homes and duplexes, and that commercial and multi-family properties may request city collection or use a private hauler authorized to work in the city. The brush page does not define residential customers. The brush page includes a cubic yard calculator that asks for width, length, and height in feet. It does not state a bagging or wrapping rule for mattresses.
Preparation
- Brush and bulky page: mattresses are listed with household items too large for the roll cart. Set them out with the monthly brush and bulky collection.
- Brush and bulky page: set out materials between Thursday and Sunday prior to your collection week. Place them just behind the curb line in front of your home.
- Brush and bulky page: do not place items on the side of the home, in an alleyway, or on property across from or adjacent to the home. Do not place them in the street, on the sidewalk, or where they interfere with vehicular or pedestrian traffic or with solid waste collection. Do not place them within 5 feet of a roll cart, mailbox, fence or wall, water meter, telephone connection box, parked cars, fire hydrant, utility or light pole, or traffic sign. Do not place them under low hanging tree limbs or power lines.
- Brush and bulky page: crews will not collect materials they cannot reasonably reach with the grapple arm and claw, or if there is a reasonable belief that damage may be caused to property. An orange tag means a collection violation has to be corrected before that location is serviced.
- Code compliance top-10 page, citing Section 18-4: no material may be placed out front earlier than 7:00 a.m. on Thursday prior to collection week, and it must be in place by 7:00 a.m. the Monday of the pickup week. That page says violations are immediately ticketed.
- Code compliance legacy page: no material may be placed out for collection earlier than the Thursday preceding the collection week, or later than 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of the collection week.
- 2026 calendar insert linked from the brush page: place items at the curb between Thursday and Sunday before the scheduled collection week. Do not place items under trees or power lines, or near sprinklers, water meters, or other obstructions. The same insert says to download the free Dallas Sanitation app for reminders by push notification, email, or text. It does not print a store link.
- Brush and bulky page: a 20 cubic yard collection can be requested once per calendar year, online, in the Dallas 311 app, or by calling 3-1-1. Submit it the week prior to the brush and bulky week, no later than Sunday 11:59 p.m. the day before the scheduled Monday collection week. The page says the request cannot be cancelled once submitted.
How to schedule
- Use the monthly brush and bulky week, not a separate mattress appointment. The schedule page says to enter the home address for the garbage, recycling, and brush and bulk calendar. The collections FAQ says to enter the address on its linked map. The 2026 calendar insert says to visit Dallas.gov/sanitation or call 3-1-1, and its calendar labels weeks as 1st Monday, 2nd Monday, 3rd Monday, 4th Monday, and No Collection.
- Put the mattress just behind the curb in front of the home between Thursday and Sunday before that collection week. Keep it clear of the street, the sidewalk, and the obstructions the brush page lists. The code compliance top-10 page instead says material must be out no earlier than 7:00 a.m. Thursday and in place by 7:00 a.m. Monday. The legacy code page says not earlier than the Thursday before collection week and not later than 7:00 a.m. Monday.
- Stay within 10 cubic yards unless a once-a-year 20 cubic yard request was submitted by Sunday 11:59 p.m. the day before the Monday collection week. The brush page calls that larger set-out an exception. The calendar insert calls it an exemption. The brush page says the request cannot be cancelled.
- A set-out over the allowed volume, or one that contains prohibited items, is generally still collected. The brush page says the customer is then billed $60 per 5 cubic yards, in 5 cubic yard increments, and that early, oversize, and non-compliant set-outs can also draw citations.
- Self-haul is a separate option. The calendar insert says Dallas residents can dispose of waste at the city's landfill or transfer stations and that drop-off is free at these sites with proof of Dallas residency. The facility pages list household waste, and some list furniture, but none of them name mattresses or box springs. Check the posted closure dates and the ID rule for the site before going.

- Phone and 311 app: 3-1-1 in Dallas. The brush page lists 214-670-3111 outside the city. The collections FAQ says missed garbage, brush, or recycling reports from outside the city use 214-670-5111. The brush page also says to use the Dallas 311 app for a 20 cubic yard request.

Fees
- Curbside
- The brush and bulky page does not list a separate mattress price. It says set-outs over the 10 cubic yard limit, or over the once-annual 20 cubic yard exception, or that contain prohibited items, are billed at $60 per 5 cubic yards, in 5 cubic yard increments. The FY 2025-26 rate page says Residential Collection Services (garbage, recycle, brush and bulky items) are $40.09 per month effective October 1, 2025, subject to an additional 8.25% sales tax. The sanitation about page lists a residential rate of $40.09, sales tax of $3.31, and a total of $43.40 as of 10/1/2025, and it labels the FY 2026-27 rate link as proposed. The FY 2026-27 page says those changes are approved. It lists $40.09 per month as the FY 2025-26 current-year fee through Sept 30, 2026 for residential sanitation services, alley or curb. It lists a curb rate of $37.76 per month effective Feb. 1, 2027, and an alley rate of $45.22 per month effective Feb 1, 2027. Its column header says FY 2026-27 approved fees begin Oct 1, 2027 unless otherwise noted. Its footnote says all fee changes are effective October 1, 2026, except residential sanitation services fees, which are effective February 1, 2027. That page does not print a separate residential dollar amount for October 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027.
- Notes
- Qualifying resident drop-off is published as no charge, not as a mattress price. The landfill and transfer stations page says there is no charge for Dallas residents in passenger cars, station wagons, pickups, and trailers less than 15 feet long hauling their own waste from their residences. The McCommas page says the same and adds a $40 fee for uncovered loads. The McCommas page still prints a commercial gate rate of $43.60 per ton and points to FY 2026-27 rate changes effective Oct. 1, 2026. The FY 2026-27 rate page lists the McCommas commercial gate rate as $45.78 per ton. Proof of residency is not the same on every page. The landfill overview says a current, valid driver's license is required, and proof may be a Dallas address on that license or a current Dallas water bill. The McCommas page says a current, valid Texas driver's license showing a Dallas address, or a current Dallas water utilities bill. The Bachman, Fair Oaks, and Westmoreland pages say a valid driver's license is required, plus a government-issued ID with a valid city of Dallas address or a current City of Dallas utility bill in the name of the person entering. The charge-dispute page says oversize or non-compliant brush and bulky fees come from City Code Section 18-4. A resident can submit a Sanitation Billing Dispute service request online or call 3-1-1 inside Dallas or 214-670-3111 outside the city. The page says valid dispute reasons include the wrong account, materials not collected, and a volume overcharge. It says not knowing the rules, limits, or fees is not a valid reason. The about page says that beginning February 2027, 2% of homes will move from alley to curbside collection. The brush page already says bulky items go just behind the front curb and not in an alleyway.
Drop-off locations
The brush and bulky page names mattresses for curbside collection and does not say to take them to a drop-off site. The December 2025 water-bill insert linked from that page as the 2026 calendar says Dallas residents can dispose of waste at the city's landfill or transfer stations, and that drop-off is free at these sites with proof of Dallas residency. It does not name mattresses in that drop-off sentence. The landfill and transfer stations table lists household waste and furniture at all four sites. The McCommas page also lists household waste and furniture, and it adds electronics for residents, which the table does not list for McCommas. The Bachman, Fair Oaks, and Westmoreland pages list household waste and do not list furniture. None of those facility pages name mattresses or box springs. Addresses below are the street addresses printed on each facility page. They do not include a city, state, or ZIP code. Hours are the regular hours on each facility page. The same pages say the Southwest (Westmoreland) Transfer Station will be closed October 14 through November 8 and will reopen November 9, and the Northeast (Fair Oaks) Transfer Station will be closed October 28 through November 15 and will reopen November 16. The notices do not print a year. During the closures, the pages say residents may use other open transfer stations or McCommas Bluff Landfill.

The brush page lists building materials, bricks, rock, asphalt, gravel, concrete, glass panes, glass doors, mirrors, and items with nails protruding, and says waste from a project that needs a contractor should be disposed of by the contractor. The code compliance top-10 page says the city does not collect debris from construction, demolition, or clearing of land unless an additional fee has been paid. It does not print that fee.
- Automobile parts and tires for curbside collection. The calendar insert also lists tires as not accepted.
- Dirt, soil, and sod. The code compliance page says no dirt, rock, or concrete will be removed.
