Mattress disposal in Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment picks up mattresses and box springs as bulky items, not in the regular black bin. For a home with 1 to 4 units serviced by LASAN, schedule the pickup at least one business day before the regular trash day. That page calls the service unlimited and at no additional charge. A building whose trash is hauled by a recycLA provider is on a separate on-call service that includes mattresses and is funded by a monthly Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee on the LADWP bill. Five city yards also take mattresses on the published 2026 Saturday drop-off dates.

Limits
The single-family bulky-item page says the curbside service is unlimited. It does not state a numeric cap on mattresses. The multi-family fee page says the rate adjustment was necessary for LASAN to continue to offer unlimited, on-demand pickup. The site navigation describes single-family service as a home with 1 to 4 units serviced by LASAN, and multi-family service as a home with multiple units serviced by recycLA. The fee page limits that fee to ratepayers who receive waste hauling from a recycLA Service Provider and do not pay trash fees directly to LASAN. The fact sheet says the city provides bulky-item collection to multi-family dwellings in Los Angeles not subject to the Solid Resources Fee, and that the November 2025 increase applies to ratepayers whose waste hauler is a recycLA franchise hauler and who do not pay trash fees directly to LA Sanitation. Drop-off is a different limit: the 2026 flyer says one visit per Saturday event and a two-ton vehicle limit, no larger than a flat or stake-bed truck.

Preparation

  • Schedule a Bulky Item Pickup, labeled for single-family residents: bulky items are collected on the regular trash day, and the resident must let LASAN know at least one business day before the normal collection.
  • That page says to have an itemized list ready. Its example is "one mattress, two chairs, and a desk."
  • Weekly Curbside Black Bin Collection, also labeled for single-family residents: oversized items like furniture, mattresses, and tires do not go in the black bin. Schedule a bulky-item pickup instead.
  • The same bulky-item page says a bulky item is anything non-hazardous and non-electronic that is too large to fit in the black trash bin. The accepted list on that page still names mattresses and box springs, and it also names electronic waste.
  • Multi-family Bulky Item Fee page: the city operates an on-call service for bulky items that are too large to be placed in trash containers. The fact sheet says the same service is for items which need to be discarded and are not appropriate to be placed in trash containers.
  • The bulky-item page and the 2026 drop-off flyer do not say to bag, wrap, or cut a mattress, and they do not publish a clock time for putting it at the curb.

How to schedule

  1. If LASAN collects the trash at a home with 1 to 4 units, schedule the mattress at least one business day before the regular trash day. The bulky-item page says to use the online Service Request Form at myla311.lacity.gov, the MyLA311 app, or the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489, and to have an itemized list.
  2. Put the mattress and box spring out for that regular trash day. Do not put them in the black bin. The pages read on 2026-10-22 do not publish a set-out clock time or a bagging rule.
  3. If a recycLA service provider hauls the building's trash, use the separate on-call bulky-item service. The fee page says that service collects mattresses and is unlimited and on-demand. It tells people with fee questions to call 1-800-773-2489. It does not print a separate scheduling form.
  4. Or take the mattress to one of the five yards on a published 2026 Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The flyer says the resident must be present with the most current LADWP bill and a state-issued driver's license or state identification, or the delivery will not be accepted.

Phone, app, or portal

  • Online: https://myla311.lacity.gov/s/
  • Mobile app: MyLA311, linked from the bulky-item page for Android and iPhone
  • Phone: 1-800-773-2489. The bulky-item page calls this the 24-hour Customer Care Center. The 2025 multi-family fee fact sheet says rate questions can also go to that number between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., or by email to sansrfrates2025@lacity.org.

Fees

Curbside
No additional charge for the single-family bulky-item pickup. That page says it is an unlimited curbside service at no additional charge. The black-bin page says to schedule a free curbside bulky item pickup. The City of Los Angeles residents page says LASAN will pick up items too large for a normal trash bin free of charge, and it names beds, couches, and fridges rather than mattresses. Multi-family recycLA ratepayers are different: the city bills a monthly Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee on the LADWP bill. The fee page does not print a dollar charge for one mattress pickup.
Notes
The fee page says an ordinance adjusting the Multi-Family Bulky Item Fee was approved by the Los Angeles City Council in October 2025 and implemented in November 2025. The fact sheet says the adjusted fees start in November 2025. Neither page calls the fee a per-pickup price. The fact sheet says a master-metered dwelling unit's owner pays the full fee for that unit, and a separately metered unit's fee is split equally between the owner and the resident or tenant. Its rate table, read from the fact-sheet image on 2026-10-22, is monthly per dwelling unit. Columns are November 2007, July 2025, July 2026, July 2027, July 2028, and July 2029. Resident or tenant of a separately metered unit: $0.64, $1.52, $1.57, $1.60, $1.64, $1.67. Owner of a separately metered unit: the same six amounts. Owner of a master-metered unit: $1.28, $3.04, $3.13, $3.20, $3.27, $3.34. Qualifying low-income resident or tenant of a separately metered unit, labeled a 31.25% discount: $0.44, $1.05, $1.08, $1.10, $1.13, $1.15. The fact sheet also says qualified Lifeline customers get a 100% exemption. That exemption is not a row in the table. The fee page says existing Lifeline or EZ-SAVE low-income customers do not reapply, and a customer may be in only one of those two programs. The table's July columns and the November 2025 effective wording are both printed; the fact sheet does not say which column applies on a given day.

Drop-off locations

The bulky-item page and the 2026 flyer list the same five yards and the same 2026 Saturday dates, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The flyer says the drop-off is free and for Los Angeles residents. Yard names below are the flyer's. Street lines and ZIP codes are the ones printed on the scheduling page. The flyer prints the same streets without ZIP codes: Pendelton Street, Vanalden Avenue, North Gaffey Street, Stoner Avenue, and Washington Boulevard. No yard phone is printed on either page. The customer care number is 1-800-773-2489. These dates are one Saturday a month, not every Saturday, so no weekly hours are listed.

What's not accepted

  • Mattresses, furniture, and tires in the single-family black bin. The black-bin page says those oversized items do not fit and to schedule a bulky-item pickup instead.
  • At the curb, the bulky-item page says it cannot take automotive parts or used oil; construction materials (concrete, bricks, dirt); commercial appliances; paints, solvents, or chemicals; medicines or needles; fluorescent lights; or cardboard unless there is a scheduled Move In/Move Out service.
  • The City of Los Angeles residents page uses a shorter refusal list: automotive parts, construction material, commercial waste, or cardboard. It says commercial waste, while the bulky-item page says commercial appliances, and it does not mention the Move In/Move Out exception for cardboard.
  • At the Saturday drop-off, the 2026 flyer refuses appliances (kitchen or office), automotive parts, asphalt, concrete, batteries, electronic waste, construction waste, dead animals, demolition waste, dirt and soil, incinerator residue, industrial waste, infectious waste, items with electrical plugs, liquid waste, medical waste, scrap metal, sewage sludge, and hazardous waste (solvents, automotive, flammables, electronics).
  • A drop-off without the resident present, or without the most current LADWP bill and a state-issued driver's license or state identification. The flyer says delivery will not be accepted.
  • More than one visit per Saturday event, or a vehicle over the two-ton limit. The flyer says the limit is no larger than a flat or stake-bed truck.

Other free options

Donate furniture that is still usable

The bulky-item page says to think about donating before scheduling a pickup. If furniture or appliances are still in good shape, it says to consider a local thrift store, a charity, or a community exchange app. It does not name a store, and it does not say a donation pickup is free.
