Couch and bulk furniture disposal in Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix's bulk trash page does not use the words couch or sofa. It says furniture is too large for the garbage or recycling container and is collected only by appointment, up to four times a year, in one pile no larger than 10 cubic yards. The monthly solid waste bill is the charge the city says includes those collections; the rate pages disagree on whether that monthly fee is still $37.32 or the July 2026 rate of $42.32. A full-service customer can also take one load of up to one ton a month to a city transfer station.
Rules
- Curbside allowed
- Yes
- Appointment required
- Yes
- Limits
- Four collection opportunities each year. The cancellation section calls these four total appointments for the year. One pile no larger than ten (10) cubic yards per residence. The appointment flyer says that pile must be smaller than 17 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet high. The April 22, 2026 council report says Chapter 27 establishes residential collection for single dwelling units; buildings with fewer than five dwelling units, including duplex, triplex, and fourplex units; multi-family dwelling units with five to 30 units; mobile home parks; townhomes; and condominiums. The same report says the city does not provide solid waste collection to commercial or industrial establishments or to any building with more than 30 multi-family dwelling units.
Preparation
- Bulk trash page: make an appointment before setting out the bulk item. Use the online widget at the top of that page, or call 602-262-6251.
- Bulk trash page: appointments can be made as late as 3 business days in advance, and as far as one year ahead. The page says most areas have appointments within a couple of weeks.
- Bulk trash page: do not place bulk items at the curb more than 7 days before the scheduled date. The page says it is a violation of city ordinance to place trash out more than 7 days before the appointment.
- Bulk trash page: set bulk items out in a single pile no larger than ten (10) cubic yards per residence. All material should be placed no more than 5 feet from the street, curb, or front edge of the property.
- Bulk trash page: place the pile curbside, on the edge of the property, parallel to the street or curb, and at least 5 feet away from any fixed objects. Have items placed by 5:30 a.m. on the appointment date. Do not place the pile on top of a water meter.
- Appointment flyer: place all items neatly within 5 feet of the front edge of the property and 5 feet away from fixed objects. The pile must be smaller than 17 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet high. Do not place piles on top of water meters. Do not place piles in the alley.
- Bulk trash page: each household must schedule its own pile. Do not combine piles from multiple households.
- Bulk trash page: to cancel, use the link in the confirmation email, or call 602-262-6251, no later than two business days before the appointment. A cancellation made at least 2 business days ahead does not count against the four appointments for the year.
- Bulk trash page: the scheduler blocks Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day, including the 7 days after each holiday.
- Community appointment list: some neighborhoods already have dates. One row, Westwood Village and Estates, is labeled alley placement. That is the only alley exception printed in the list read on 2026-10-22.
How to schedule
- Check the city's 2026 community and HOA appointment list before you schedule. The bulk trash page says some communities already have a collection day for the whole neighborhood.
- If your neighborhood is not on that list, schedule on the bulk trash page. The page says to use the online widget at the top of the page or call 602-262-6251. The appointment flyer says to schedule a bulk trash pickup online and to visit phoenix.gov/bulktrash for the complete list of dos and don'ts. Appointments can be made as late as 3 business days in advance and as far as one year ahead.
- After the appointment is confirmed, set the furniture out no sooner than 7 days before the date. Use one pile, no larger than 10 cubic yards, on the edge of the property and parallel to the street or curb. Keep it within 5 feet of the street, curb, or front edge, at least 5 feet from fixed objects, and off the water meter. The flyer says not to put the pile in the alley, except that the community list labels Westwood Village and Estates as alley placement.
- Have the pile out by 5:30 a.m. on the appointment day. Do not put furniture in the garbage or recycling container, and do not combine your pile with another household's.
- To cancel, use the confirmation-email link or call 602-262-6251 no later than two business days before. A cancellation at least 2 business days ahead does not count against the four appointments.
- A resident paying full-service monthly refuse fees can instead take one load of up to 1 ton to either city transfer station each calendar month. Bring a current city services bill and a photo ID with a matching name or address.

Fees
- Curbside
- The 2026 Solid Waste Rate Adjustment page says the monthly solid waste bill includes four bulk trash collections per year. Its FAQ states the current monthly residential fee as $37.32. The same page's approved schedule lists a July 2026 monthly fee of $42.32 and says the new rates went into effect July 1, 2026, after an 8-1 City Council vote on April 22, 2026. The Solid Waste Rates page says a new rate is now in effect and that the first $5 per month increase will be reflected on the July city services bill. That page prints $21.16 per month for an additional 90-gallon trash container and $10.58 per month for a green organics container, and it does not print a separate couch or bulk-trash pickup charge. The bulk trash page does not state a dollar fee.
- Notes
- The transfer station page says a resident customer paying full-service monthly refuse or trash fees may drop off one load of up to 1 ton (2,000 pounds) each calendar month at no charge. The customer must present a city services bill showing an active, current, full-service refuse account, and a photo ID with a name or address that matches the bill. No substitutions are permitted. Material over 1 ton is charged the gate rate of $55 per ton for the amount above one ton. All other loads are $55 per ton, with a $40 minimum charge. An unsecured load penalty is $20. The page does not name couches or sofas. The bulk trash page does not list a separate pickup fee.

The page also lists holiday closures and a shorter Christmas Eve day. It does not print a phone number next to either station address. The Public Works number printed on the page is 602-262-6251.
